Putting my finger on it...

One resolution I'm sure to keep in 2014 is to not inflict any selfies on anyone. This might be as close as you're gonna get, but it's a nice encapsulation of some moments from life.

That's how the Fickle Finger of the First now looks, likely to leave a scar on that first knuckle right where you see the red-dyness. But first look up to that little frowny indentation on the very top of the same finger. That's what remains from over 35 years ago, when this finger took its first beating.  Details will be spared, but I was at work, and something fell down go boom on it in a bad way. I got carted over to the emergency room at Nassau County Medical Center a mere four blocks away, got taped up (I don't recall stitches) and a box placed round it, and that's how it eventually healed.  The store paid the ER bill, but no pay for lost time off, no workers' comp for the injury itself- all of those things I found out about much later once it was way too late (and this was the only time in my life I was in a union, but they cared only for their full-time lifers and never lifted a, well....)

The middle story is the one from the bottom of that finger, which I should probably turn around for a better view:

I took my wedding ring off for the second day of the healing, when (a) the dressing was pushing down and cramping the lower joint and (b) I was fearful of Bad Things happening in the night and having it removed in an ER someplace.  It's back on, now, and it's rarely come off in the 26-plus years I've been wearing it.  It's also on upside-down, as it's been since the day Eleanor put it on that way.

Her set was a match of it; the wedding band designed with a V to be worn under the engorgement ring (as it was christened soon after I got her that), which has a design complementing that one. I say her set "was" a match because she lost the band at her last job before Wegmans; she's worked far more with her hands at virtually all of her jobs, and both rings were off that one night at the furniture place and only the stone came home.

She wears it occasionally, but more often goes with a combination of her mother's ring and other modest bling. She's asked if I mind her being so unconventional and I've replied that, hell, if I wanted conventional I never would have asked YOU in the first place;)

There's also some juju associated with that set. The bands themselves were made by the then-husband of a still-friend, who melted down some gold pieces we both contributed to make the new ones; he turned out soon after the wedding to be a major ne'er-do-well, and our still-friend has remarried much more happily.  There was also some involvement of one of Eleanor's oldest friends who she's now estranged from.

From time to time, I've thought about trying to get her matching band remade so the set can again be complete- but now, I'm thinking, the time to do that will be when Emily is ready to wear one- if that's what she, and her he (the eventual one, though bets can certainly be made) would like to do.

Church now. Will try not to get the finger caught in the microphone.

LOL I don't think conventional would have worked for you. :)

So what exactly did you do to your finger this time? Did I miss something?

Oh, you missed this little pratfall from New Years Morning?

It's a long-standing tradition of ours to spend national holidays dealing either with medical, veterinary or plumbing emergencies. Someday we're gonna work in all three....

I'm not allowed back in a hospital for a very long time.
