Live Chickens and Dead Ducks
The live chickens were in Lockport. Eleanor was due to restock the freezer with a few of the locally-grown free-rangers we've been partial to for years, and her source for the past month or so has been a small Niagara County farm about 20 minutes north of here. Barbara was only available in the morning today, so I came with, in order to see both the layers and the meat chickens in action.

First, though, was the drive through the northern reaches of our town and then into the bordering burgs to the north of it: REPEAL THE SAFE ACT signs abound (Pendleton's the one-time home of domestic terrorist Timothy McVeigh), there are more than a few McMansions that look like they blew in from East Amherst in a Wizard-of-Ozlike cyclone, and then there's this:

That's a Google Earth image from three years ago, but it's just as Barbie Dreamhouse dreamy today.

By the time we crossed through Cambria and onto Barbara's street, things were a lot more Earthy in a nicer, non-Googly kind of way.  Closest to our car were the laying chickens in their employ-

- while the "meat chickens," the ones we might be buying from Barbara next month, were huddled round the waterer-

Unlike their layin' cousins, this bunch tends to just hang around the food and water supplies and pack on the pounds. It's as if they know what their fates are (and who am I to say they don't?).

We left with two of their recent ancestors, plucked and frozen, and enjoyed the same scenery heading back - although the biggest RESIST CUOMO-REPEAL THE SAFE ACT sign we saw, almost big enough to be seen from space, turned out to be in front of a house barely a mile from home.

Those were the chickens. The dead ducks turned out to be of the Jersey variety, 400 miles to the south and east.  The Bills finished the first half of their season in the Jersey Meadowlands, where their playoff hopes, much like Jimmy Hoffa, have historically gone to die. But not today: Jets quarterbacks coughed up the ball seven different times, giving the Bills their fifth win (and first easy one) of the season.  It wasn't without controversy on both sides; Gang Green benched their young rookie quarterback after he completed three straight passes to the other team, and then the Bills' most promising rookie missed scoring an easy touchdown when he started stylin' a few yards short of the goal line and got mercilessly hammered for it, first by a Jet defender and then on Twitter-

Fortunately, the Bills scored immediately after that, so for him, at least, it was no-harm-no-fowl.  Unlike the new contents of our freezer;)

Do coaches not teach the precautionary take of Leon Lett?

All the more appropriate to mention him because it was against the Bills (and both he and Don Beebe, who caught him, have been mentioned many times here in the past 24 hours).
