Off My Feed.
I had a very busy day today, little of it spent in or on any form of social media. Given the significance of this anniversary, it's better that way.  I still have visceral reactions- both to the images of the morning itself, and to the less-but-still-horrid attempts to politicize it, year after year after year.  The only appropriate part of the day to my psyche was the moment of silence that a nationally broadcast sports show observed at 8:46.  It captured about all I had to say.

So instead, I'll tell you about a lighter, weirder moment later in the day.

I stopped at a feed store outside Batavia on my way home after about 26 hours away. It's my go-to source for finch food, a favourite of the birds who decamp in our front yard.  (Albert, the tumbler pigeon who we enjoyed seeing for months, seems to have amscrayed.  We're saddened but accepting of it being nature's way.)  A large bag of their version for 26 bucks lasts about five times as long as the 13-dollar smaller ones of the (roughly) same mix you can (usually) get at Wegmans.  They must think it odd that a business-suited dude comes in every 2-3 weeks, heads for that one shelf in the back, pets the barn-cat in the rawhide aisle and hands over the cache for the finch-feeder stache.

They out-weirded me today, though. A few doors down on Route 5 was a goofy motel sign, which I wanted to photograph and Facebook with appropriate Walking Dead reference-

So I'm in my car, my finch food already in the trunk, while I'm doing the iPhone Share Photo drill- and my trunk reopens on its own. I feel a thud and the trunk is shut.

Already attuned to zombies, I get out and stop the very non-zombieish store employee who has just loaded a 50-pound bag of chicken feed into the back of my car.

Um, not mine...., I clue him in.

He shrugs, removes it and goes back into the store.

Who knows? Maybe Albert would have come back for that horde of feede. Even if he's now in search of birdBRAINNNNNNNs.
