Possession is 9/10ths of this Bleeping Computer
I finally gave up this morning, trying workarounds and prayers to keep this laptop living on.  I brought it home for the first time in over a week; it seemed to be okay running off battery power, so I charged it when I wasn't using it, and used it when I wasn't charging it.  But the office-mate I'm renting from is back in town today and Monday, so I figured I had enough to do from home and brought Tobor back to his old spot on my desk at home so she could use the desk and computer here.

My laptop didn't like these arrangements.

Some of the fault is mine; instead of letting him sit in just one place, I actually, briefly, used him as a laptop, as in "in my lap," while downloading a rather large (and quite legal) file last night. BLINK!  I brought him back to my desk. ANOTHER BLINK!  We were back to the Nativity Unstable.

I pulled my previous days' work onto external drives, uploaded my entire onboard email file to the Cloud, saved my Firefox profile (pro tip: always remember THAT particular step)- doing so with only one or two crashes, and then waited for Office Depot Formerly Office Max to open.

It did, and was, but it won't be for long.  That location is one of the merged chains' sacrificial ones, and they're in full EVERYTHING MUST GO mode.  The guru who was so helpful with Eleanor's problems over the summer when she needed to use the same protection plan coverage? Gone.  I was referred to the purchase protection phone number on the receipt, and was told they would probably not even bother to try fixing it, instead sending a gift card for the purchase price.

I called, and that's not what they're saying, yet.  Same drill the missus went through: I need to wait for a shipping box to arrive, it needs to go to the factory, and once it gets there they have 10 business days to either repair or issue the gift card.

So, hello January!

Fortunately, it should be a relatively quiet couple of weeks.  And just to drive me completely crazy, I've had it up and running back at my office for close to three hours now, with nary a BLINK!  Maybe the climate control in here, and/or lack of cats prowling around the monitor, make it less likely to crash.

In the meantime, I have a few days to make sure everything- pdfs of old bankruptcy cases, photos in odd places, diddlybits of software I occasionally use- gets stored someplace, on the premise that Tobor may never come home, or may be computercatatonic when and if he does.  If I had the cash flow to do it, I'd buy the replacement first and get things all in place beforehand; worst case, I'd then make this machine my backup if they manage to fix it.  But things have been tight the past few weeks and the holidays are perfect excuses to put off paying your legal bills for a few weeks, so I don't see that happening unless something unexpectedly pops early next week.

Something other than this computer, that is:P
