Too close. To home. - Blather. Rants. Repeat.
A Møøse once bit my sister ...
Too close. To home.
Eleanor posted about this earlier, except for the final chapter: she saw the kids next door earlier when she was gardening out front, and learned that our neighbor Laura was a longtime friend of Natalie Lewis, the Buffalo native who was on the hot air balloon that caught fire and crashed in Virginia yesterday.

The only remaining hope was of, and for, a miracle, but the story's just been updated: Natalie's body has been found, 100 yards or so from the others, in a heavily wooded area.

Buffalo being Buffalo, we will no doubt hear of other people in the coming days who knew her, or were tragically touched by her loss.

One of the few specific sentences I remember from my sister's funeral, 25 Octobers ago, came from our own mother, who managed to capture the moment in simplicity and certainty:

Nobody should have to bury their own child.

At least Natalie's family now can. Sympathies to them, and bittersweet Mothers Day wishes to all who are, who have, who had.

One of my livejournal friends, and I'm not linking to him right now, lost his wife unexpectedly a couple years ago. I've met them both, and they were one of those couples who'd been married for so many decades that they just totally fit together, and it devastated him.

Then, about a year later, one of their daughters died unexpectedly. His comment was that it was the only moment he'd ever been glad his wife died so that she was spared that pain.

(I've been amazed by his fortitude. He continues to do fascinating and important astrophysics work with NASA, continues to be part of country dance groups and Roman Empire recreation groups, and generally be an active and social member of society. Under the same sort of stress, I think I'd have collapsed into myself.)
