Transitions.
Not much time left to reflect as the 2014th Doctor gets ready to regenerate.  Looking at this year's end compared to its beginning, we got to a good place in many ways.  Emily is done with school and settled into what may be a long-term situation for both work and home. A second kitty came into their lives and, occasionally, ours.  Meanwhile, our brood stayed the same size, got a year older, stayed mostly healthy, and all of them do wonders to make our nest seem anything but empty.

Work had ups and downs for both of us, but we each ended the year well ahead of where we ended 2013.  My loans for Emily's college have now fully kicked into repayment, but as often happens, work has expanded to fill the need and we're doing okay.

Probably the biggest change came down to a couple of fateful days at midyear, when Eleanor and I both decided that we could live in a home and in lives with a lot less alcohol. For over four months, neither of us touched a drop; since earlier this month, we've found that a bottle with dinner, around once a week, is about as much as we want and about a bottle more than what we need.  Learning that limit makes the excesses of the past seem, well, excessive- and not anything either of us want to get back to.

I saw a future World Series MVP shut out the Mets, and met a Torchwood member on the same trip. I read 54 books (finishing Gone Girl, the last of them, earlier today) and shared any number of amazing films with Eleanor and Emily. This journal passed its tenth anniversary, its 5,000th post, and became an almost everyday routine- only seven days missed all year.

Some LJ friends fell off the grid, but several new ones came along (many, thanks, to the kindness of ecosopher in hosting a Friendzy a few months back). LJ itself has gotten into some bad habits, including a revamp of its mobile app into near-uselessness and an "entries feed" pseudo-Facebook format which I despise and am tossed-cookie'd back into several times a day.  I've joined something called Ello with virtually no use, and have largely dropped the duplication of these entries on Dreamwidth. Both remain fair game if this place goes totally stupid.

Sport was a waste. The Mets had some bright spots but not enough to overcome the failings of their ownership. The Sabres are halfway to a goal of Suck that might make things much brighter by Tux and Pucks Night a year from now. As for the Bills: their quarterback retired and their coach quit, just in the past 72 hours.  Despite new ownership committed to retaining the team here, there's increasingly nobody on the team who wants to be.

Eleanor works tomorrow and Friday; I'll be taking down the tree and likely marathoning something-or-other.  Then I have court appearances on five of the first six workdays starting the following Monday.  Billy Joel awaits in February, and other fascinations will follow.

The year is dead. Long live the year.

Thanks:)

For some reason, this seemed most appropriate for you this morning:

Huh-- I'd heard about Orton but not about the coach. :( Have they leaked a shortlist? I'll be living in Cowboys territory for next season, apparently (far enough from Houston) which should be interesting for a Bills fan, and in Cardinals territory for the playoffs this year. (So I've decided to root for the Lions. :P)

Seems only right. They were nice enough to lose to the Bills in October, and even nicer to loan out their field when ours got snowed in, which was another win. Maybe if Caldwell gets fired, Marrone can take that job; he seems to like coaching there.

Most interesting name so far is Frank Reich, currently the OC with San Diego. Plus there's talk of the old GM Polian coming back. Now to put Scott Norwood in charge of parking the cars- after they build all the new lots on the right side of the stadium:P

Nice-- he's done good work with the Chargers; I saw part of the last night game they played (I fell asleep at halftime, I think, as the games don't start until 0130 here).

Isn't he at Indy? Or has he left? It's virtually impossible to keep track over here.
