Wegmans- Every Day You Get Our Bust™
I've got a new bingewatch. When word got out last week about New York real estate magnate Robert Durst getting arrested after the airing of an HBO documentary about his past alleged acts, I kinda ho-hummed it. But then the New Yorker review of it reminded me of an earlier connection I'd missed:

This is a man, after all, who, long after the mysterious disappearance of his first wife, Kathie, fled to Galveston, Texas, disguised himself as a mute woman, and then, while out on bail for the murder of a neighbor—whose corpse Durst dismembered with a bow saw—was arrested for shoplifting a chicken-salad sandwich at a Wegmans. (At the time, Durst had thirty-eight thousand dollars in his car.)

I remembered that SOMEBODY had been busted while on the lam, years back,  by Danny's crack Asset Protection Police- even that it was the Bethlehem, PA Wegmans where it happened. That was the recollection that has now gotten me hooked, and already halfway through the six-part extended interview with the man, directed by the same guy who staged the "fictional" version of it a decade ago starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst.

Apparently, they caught him on-mike admitting to having killed "all of them"- the Texas dude he'd jumped bail from charges of killing (and for which he was eventually acquitted), his long-missing wife from the early 1980s, and his long-time "friend" named Susan Berman, for whose death he is now facing murder charges in California. All the weirder, I went to both high school and college with a (different) Susan Berman- a coincidence that still creeps me every time they mention her name, given the homicide history of our former home town.

Three hours into his sociopathic interview sessions, I'm still not sure if they're going to be able to connect the dots to tie him to the original crime of killing his wife, but I am sure of one thing:

Wegmans damn well got paid for that six-dollar sub.

ETA. Saturday Night Live spoofed the controversy last night- and Wegmans even got name-checked:

My first, very brief, thought about your headline (uh, subject line) was that someone at Wegman's was flashing her breasts. I suppose it's one way to distract the employees while you steal a chicken salad sandwich.
